homework on Sundays.

I remember the first time someone (in college) told me that they didn't do homework on Sundays. I don't remember what exactly I said, but I know I laughed a little inside and wondered how in the world they got anything done. Sacrificing one day out of seven, in hopes of being more productive, seemed counter intuitive at best.

My last semester at BYU, I had a teacher who challenged us not to do homework on Sundays. He talked about getting his Masters and PhD at Chapel Hill (in a four year time frame, nuts) and said that in the whole four years he was there, he never did homework on Sundays. Something about the challenge stuck with me and I went home and talked to Kory and we decided, then and there, we wouldn't do homework on Sundays.

That last semester, as you would expect a final semester of senior-level work to be, was very academically challenging both of us.  I was taking a lot of classes (some of them starting as early as 8 am - gross) and the materials we were both learning were really difficult and time consuming. I remember one Saturday, looking over all that I needed to do, and telling Kory I'd have to break our challenge and do homework the next day. He told me to do whatever I needed to. Somehow, though, I managed to get it all done and the challenge went on. Every week, somehow, we managed to get it all done. It wasn't incredibly hard, but it wasn't easy either - it took some planning, some determination, and a sweet, kind, Heavenly Father picking up the slack (and lots of it). But boy were our Sundays sweet. Church was more enjoyable knowing all we had to do afterwards was spend time with family and eat. The evenings seemed longer and simpler. We were able to stay at my parents' house after dinner and play cards or talk outside without having to worry about what needed to be done. Mondays were less frantic because Sundays were peaceful. All religious matters aside, it was just wonderful to have one obligation-free day. One day that we could look forward to, linger on, enjoy. And boy, were those days sweet. We're (happily) graduated now, but as I see everyone going back to school I can't help but think about how, if I could do it all over again, I would have been a homework-free-Sunday kind of girl right from the start.
