the things we can't remember.

Today I read a poem and it made me think that sometimes the ideas we can't remember are the ones we believe are our best. Like when you come up with a really great line, or have a ground breaking dream and then it flees from you and you're left believing that one idea would have changed the world, and simultaneously knowing you'll never be able to remember it.  Sometimes I think that if we could actually remember  the thought we'd likely be surprised by it's mediocrity. And I think sometimes that defines the way we see our own lives: often believing that something is better, or that the future will be more exciting, or that our ideas would be perfect if we could remember them, and then being disappointed when we get there. I'm not saying we shouldn't have goals or dreams or plans, we should have all of those things. But we should love where we are as well. I often think trying to remember old memories or plan future adventures shows unnecessary restlessness. I guess what I'm getting at is that sometimes where we are is exactly where we're supposed to be, and it deserves all of our thoughts, all of our energy.

Also, here's a little piece of the poem, by Li-Young Lee. You can read the whole poem here if you like.

And one day, when I need
to tell myself something intelligent
about love,

I’ll close my eyes
and recall this room and everything in it.

I think this sums it all up pretty well. The line that this cute little sign doesn't include is one that comes a little bit later. " I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life." I just think that's lovely.

  2. I just read that poem in my English class last week! We watched a video of Li-Young reading the poem too. Hearing it out loud gives it so much meaning!
